Description

C. 1100-1300 AD. Byzantine. A pair of elaborate multi-tiered gold earrings comprising a primary hoop filled with openwork wave pattern flanked by rows of crosses, From each of these hoops are suspended two wire pendants, terminating in green and red gemstones (probably jasper, garnet and carnelian). These pendants in turn support a further openwork kite-shaped pendant bearing intricate floral motifs. A total of five further pendants, each bearing additional gemstones, are suspended from each of these kite pendants. The medieval empire of Byzantium, the successor of Rome in the eastern Mediterranean, was justly famous for the elegance of its jewellery, whether in precious metals for empresses and aristocratic women, or in bronze for people further down the social ladder. These beautiful earrings may once have adorned the ears of a Byzantine noblewoman. Excellent condition; wearable. Provenance: Property of a W. L. G.; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market in the 1980s.
